Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 26, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Freewheel ("Freewheel," "we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use the Freewheel mobile application, including ride recording, ride summaries, share cards, privacy zones, widgets, and related features (collectively, the "App").
Freewheel is designed to keep ride and location data on your device. The App collects location data from your device to record your ride even when the app is closed or not in use, but that location data stays on your phone. The App does not require an account, does not offer cloud sync today, does not operate a ride-history backend, and does not upload your ride history, route geometry, or sensor readings to our servers. The App contains no advertising SDKs and no analytics or tracking SDKs. It does use Firebase Crashlytics for crash reporting, which is the only information the App sends off your device on its own; that is described in Section 3.
1. Information the App Stores on Your Device
When you use the App, it may store the following information locally on your phone:
- precise and approximate location points collected during a ride so route, distance, and speed can be recorded
- ride summaries such as distance, duration, speed-derived metrics, and elevation totals
- route geometry recorded during a ride
- barometer and related sensor readings used to estimate climb and descent where supported
- privacy-zone settings used to mask sensitive start and end points
- ride display preferences, theme choices, and other app settings
- generated share-card assets and cached thumbnails
- widget or live-activity state needed to show current or recent ride information
This information is stored on device using local databases, files, and platform-supported app storage.
2. Permissions and Device Access
Depending on the features you use, the App may request access to:
- precise or approximate location, so the App can record a ride route and distance
- background location, so recording can continue while the screen is locked or when the App is closed or not in use
- motion or sensor access, including barometer-related readings where available, so elevation and ride-state features can work more accurately
- notifications, so the App can show ride-status information while a ride is active
If you decline a permission, the feature that depends on it may not work as intended.
3. Crash Reporting
The App uses Firebase Crashlytics, a service provided by Google, so that we can find and fix crashes. When the App crashes or hits an unhandled error, Crashlytics sends a report to Firebase containing:
- the stack trace and error details for the crash
- application state relevant to the crash, such as app version and whether the app was in the foreground
- device and operating-system information, such as device model and OS version
- a Crashlytics installation identifier and a Firebase installation identifier, which are generated for the app installation on your device
Crash reports do not contain your rides, route coordinates, location history, or privacy-zone settings, and the App does not attach custom keys, custom logs, or user identifiers to them. Crash reports are not linked to a name, an email address, or an account, because Freewheel has neither. We use crash reports only to diagnose stability problems. They are not used for advertising, marketing, or tracking you across apps or websites.
Firebase processes this information on our behalf as a service provider, under Firebase's privacy documentation. Deleting or reinstalling the App resets the installation identifiers described above.
4. How Information Is Used
Information stored by the App is used to:
- record and display your rides, including while the screen is locked during a ride
- calculate ride metrics such as duration, distance, and climb
- apply privacy masking before a route is shown in shareable outputs
- power ride widgets, live activities, and on-device summaries
- preserve your preferences between launches
Freewheel uses this information to make the App function on your device. We do not sell your personal information.
5. Sharing and Disclosure
Freewheel does not upload your rides or location history to our servers today. There is no account, no cloud profile, and no server-side ride history in the current version of the App.
Information may leave your device only in the following limited situations:
- crash reports sent to Firebase Crashlytics, as described in Section 3
- when you intentionally share a ride card, image, or other export using your device's share sheet
- when required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, and security
If you choose to share an export, the receiving app or service handles that information under its own terms and privacy practices.
6. Data Retention
Ride information is stored on your device and remains there until you delete it, clear the App's data, or uninstall the App. We do not hold copies of it, so it is never retained on our servers.
Crash reports are retained by Firebase under its Crashlytics retention practices; individual crash records are kept for a limited period (currently 90 days) and are then deleted automatically.
7. Deleting Your Data
You are always in control of Freewheel's data, and you do not need to contact us or wait for us to act in order to erase it. There is no account to close, because the App does not create one.
Delete a single ride
- Open Freewheel and go to the History tab.
- Swipe a ride to the left, or press and hold it and choose Delete ride.
- An Undo option appears for about five seconds. Once it disappears, the ride and its route, metrics, and generated share-card assets are removed from your device.
Delete all of your rides at once
- Open Freewheel and tap the settings (gear) icon on the Ride tab.
- Under Your data, tap Delete all rides.
- Confirm in the dialog, which tells you how many rides are about to be removed.
This permanently erases every ride held on the device — routes, ride summaries, metrics, and generated share cards. Unlike deleting a single ride, it cannot be undone, and Freewheel keeps no backup or server-side copy to restore from.
If you want a copy of your rides before erasing them, choose Your data → Export all rides first to save them as GPX or JSON.
Remove everything the App has stored
Deleting your rides leaves your app preferences and privacy-zone setting on the device. To remove those as well, use either method:
- Uninstall the App. On both Android and iOS, uninstalling Freewheel removes the App's locally stored data, subject to your platform's backup, restore, or device-management behavior.
- Clear the App's storage (Android). Open your device's Settings → Apps → Freewheel → Storage → Clear storage. This erases all Freewheel data while keeping the App installed. iOS does not offer an equivalent control, so on iOS delete the App to achieve the same result.
Request deletion of data held off your device
The only information the App sends off your device on its own is crash-report data (Section 3). We do not hold any account, profile, ride, or location data on our servers, so there is nothing of that kind for us to delete on request.
To request deletion of crash-report data associated with your installation, email hello@loftybits.com with the subject "Data deletion request" and include:
- the device model and operating-system version you used
- the approximate dates on which the crash or crashes occurred
- your Firebase installation identifier, if you have it
We will respond within 30 days. Because crash reports carry no name, email address, or account, we may be unable to single out reports belonging to one person; where that is the case we will tell you, and you can stop future crash reports from being sent by uninstalling the App. Crash reports we do not delete on request are deleted automatically under the retention period described in Section 6.
If you have already uninstalled the App, no further data is collected from you, and any remaining crash reports are deleted at the end of that retention period.
8. Security
Freewheel is built to minimize data collection by keeping ride and location data on device. No method of storage is completely secure, but reducing what leaves the phone is part of the App's design.
9. Children's Privacy
Freewheel is not directed to children under 13, or under the minimum age required by applicable law in your jurisdiction. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, contact us so we can review the situation.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and publish the revised version through the App, the relevant app store listing, or another appropriate channel.
